Citizen Scientists to Aid in Galaxy Classification with ESA
European Space Agency Seeks Public's Help
New Galaxy Zoo Project Launched
The European Space Agency (ESA) is calling on volunteers to assist in classifying galaxies. The data deluge from the agency's space telescopes is overwhelming, and ESA hopes that citizen scientists can lend a hand. Through a new initiative called Galaxy Zoo, volunteers will be able to identify the shapes of galaxies.
The Navigator tool allows groups to work together to classify galaxies and explore their properties. Galaxy Zoo is one of the most successful citizen science projects to date, with hundreds of thousands of volunteers contributing to the classification of galaxies.
ESA and the Euclid consortium have partnered with Galaxy Zoo to take advantage of the public's enthusiasm for astronomy. By participating in Galaxy Zoo, volunteers can help scientists better understand the universe and the galaxies within it.
